iTunes was a media player, media library, and online store application developed by Apple Inc. It was originally released in 2001 and served as the central hub for managing and organizing digital music and video content on Mac and Windows computers. Over the years, iTunes underwent various changes and feature expansions, including the addition of an online store for purchasing and downloading music, movies, TV shows, and more.
Key features and functions of iTunes included:
- Media Library Management: iTunes allowed users to organize and manage their digital media libraries, including music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and audiobooks.
- Music Syncing: Users could sync their iTunes libraries with iPods, iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices, enabling the transfer of music and other media content to and from these devices.
- Online Store: iTunes featured an online store where users could purchase and download digital music, movies, TV shows, and other content. It became one of the largest digital music retailers globally.
- iTunes Store Gift Cards: Users could buy and redeem iTunes Store gift cards to add credit to their accounts, allowing them to make purchases from the store.
- Podcasting: iTunes supported the management and downloading of podcasts, allowing users to subscribe to and listen to their favorite podcasts.
- Device Backups and Updates: iTunes served as a tool for backing up and restoring iOS devices, as well as updating their operating systems.
- Home Sharing: iTunes included a feature called Home Sharing, which allowed users to share their iTunes libraries across devices within the same local network.
- Media Playback: iTunes functioned as a media player, allowing users to play their music and video content directly within the application.
In 2019, Apple announced that iTunes would be replaced by three separate apps on macOS Catalina: Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Podcasts. This move was part of a broader effort to streamline and simplify media-related functions on Mac computers. Windows users continued to use iTunes for a while, but eventually, Apple introduced separate apps for Windows as well, similar to the macOS approach.
As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, iTunes has been officially replaced by the individual apps mentioned above. Users can access their media content through these dedicated apps, each tailored for specific types of content (music, TV shows, and podcasts).
