Screen-to-body ratio

The screen-to-body ratio, often expressed as a percentage, is a metric that measures the proportion of a device’s front surface that is occupied by the display screen compared to the total front surface of the device. In other words, it indicates how much of the device’s front is dedicated to the screen, providing an assessment of the device’s bezel size and overall design efficiency.

The formula for calculating the screen-to-body ratio is:

Screen-to-Body Ratio=Display AreaTotal Front Area×100Screen-to-Body Ratio=Total Front AreaDisplay Area×100

Where:

  • Display AreaDisplay Area is the total area of the display screen.
  • Total Front AreaTotal Front Area is the total front surface area of the device.

A higher screen-to-body ratio is generally considered desirable, as it implies a larger display relative to the device’s overall size. This can lead to a more immersive viewing experience and a sleeker, more modern design. As technology has advanced, manufacturers have worked to minimize bezels (the borders around the display) to increase the screen-to-body ratio.

It’s important to note that the screen-to-body ratio does not consider the aspect ratio of the display. Devices with the same screen-to-body ratio may still have different display shapes, such as 16:9, 18:9, or other aspect ratios. Aspect ratio can affect how content is displayed on the screen.

Consumers interested in maximizing screen size without increasing the overall device size often look for devices with high screen-to-body ratios. This metric is commonly associated with smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices with displays. However, variations in design choices, such as the placement of cameras and sensors, can impact the achievable screen-to-body ratio.
