ProMotion is a display technology introduced by Apple that is primarily associated with some iPad models. It is designed to deliver a smoother and more responsive visual experience by dynamically adjusting the display’s refresh rate based on the content being viewed. The technology was first introduced with the iPad Pro.
Key features of ProMotion Display include:
- High Refresh Rate: ProMotion allows the iPad’s display to refresh at a higher rate than standard displays. While traditional displays typically have a 60Hz refresh rate (refreshing the image on-screen 60 times per second), ProMotion-enabled displays can achieve refresh rates of up to 120Hz or 120 frames per second (fps).
- Adaptive Refresh Rate: One of the key features of ProMotion is its adaptive refresh rate. The display can dynamically adjust its refresh rate based on the content being displayed. For example, when viewing static content or reading, the refresh rate may be lowered to conserve power, while it can increase for smoother motion in video playback or gaming.
- Reduced Latency: The higher refresh rate contributes to reduced input latency, making interactions with the iPad’s touchscreen more responsive. This is particularly beneficial for tasks that involve drawing with the Apple Pencil or engaging in fast-paced gaming.
- Fluid Scrolling and Animation: The higher refresh rate results in smoother scrolling and animations, providing a visually appealing and more immersive experience when navigating through apps, websites, or other content.
- Enhanced Apple Pencil Performance: ProMotion technology complements the Apple Pencil, offering improved precision and responsiveness when drawing or annotating on the iPad’s display.
- Compatibility with HDR Content: ProMotion technology is compatible with High Dynamic Range (HDR) content, allowing for vibrant colors and improved contrast in supported apps and videos.
It’s important to note that ProMotion is specific to certain iPad models, particularly the iPad Pro lineup. As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the iPad Pro models, including the 12.9-inch and 11-inch versions, feature ProMotion Display technology. Other iPad models and Apple devices may have different display technologies and specifications.
