How to Use Face ID on Your iPhone or iPad

Face ID is a revolutionary feature that allows you to unlock your iPhone or iPad, authenticate purchases, sign in to apps, and more, all with just a glance. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make the most of this feature:

1. Setting Up Face ID

  • Ensure there’s nothing obstructing the TrueDepth camera or your face. If you’re wearing glasses or a face mask, you might need to remove them temporarily during setup.
  • For iPhone 12 or later with iOS 15.4 and beyond, Face ID can work even with face masks.
  • To set up:
    • Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Enter your passcode if prompted.
    • Tap Set Up Face ID.
    • Hold your device in portrait mode, position your face in front, and tap Get Started.
    • Move your head gently to complete the circle. If you can’t move your head, tap Accessibility Options.
    • After the first scan, tap Continue and repeat the process.
    • Once done, tap Done.

2. Unlocking Your Device with Face ID

  • Either raise your device to wake it or tap the screen.
  • Swipe up from the bottom of the Lock screen.
  • Hold your device in portrait mode and glance at it. For iPhone 12 or later, you can use either portrait or landscape mode.
  • If wearing a mask, you might be prompted to enter your passcode.

3. Making Purchases with Face ID

  • For in-store purchases using Apple Pay:
    • Ensure Apple Pay is set up in Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
    • Double-click the side button and glance at your device to authenticate.
    • Hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader.
  • For online purchases within apps or Safari:
    • Tap the Buy with Apple Pay button.
    • Double-click the side button and glance at your device.

4. Using Face ID in App Store, iTunes Store, and Apple Books

  • Ensure iTunes & App Store is turned on in Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
  • In the respective store, tap on an item to purchase.
  • Double-click the side button and glance at your device to authenticate.

5. Signing In with Face ID

  • For apps supporting Touch ID sign-in:
    • Open the app and tap sign in.
    • Allow the app to use your username or password.
    • Glance at your device to sign in.
  • For autofilling passwords in Safari:
    • Ensure Password AutoFill is turned on in Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
    • In Safari, tap the sign-in field.
    • Glance at your device to autofill your username and password.

Face ID is designed to provide a seamless and secure user experience. Remember, certain features might require specific iPhone or iPad models and iOS versions.
