PPI

PPI stands for “Pixels Per Inch,” and it is a measurement used to describe the pixel density of a display. It indicates how many pixels are packed into one inch of a screen’s surface. PPI is a crucial factor in determining the sharpness and clarity of a display, with higher PPI values generally corresponding to clearer and more detailed images.

Here’s how PPI is calculated:

=(Horizontal Pixels2+Vertical Pixels2)/Diagonal Size (in inches)PPI=(Horizontal Pixels2+Vertical Pixels2)/Diagonal Size (in inches)

In this formula:

  • Horizontal PixelsHorizontal Pixels and Vertical PixelsVertical Pixels represent the resolution of the display in pixels along the horizontal and vertical dimensions, respectively.
  • Diagonal Size (in inches)Diagonal Size (in inches) is the size of the display measured diagonally.

For example, if you have a smartphone with a screen resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a diagonal size of 5 inches, the PPI would be calculated as follows:

=(10802+19202)/5PPI=(10802+19202)/5

This gives the Pixels Per Inch value for that particular display.

Higher PPI values generally result in sharper and more detailed images because the pixels are packed more densely. PPI is often used to compare the display sharpness of devices such as smartphones, tablets, monitors, and other digital screens. Keep in mind that factors such as display technology (LCD, OLED, etc.) and color accuracy also contribute to the overall quality of the visual experience.
