The iPhone 18 is not the launch most people were expecting. Instead of four phones landing together, Apple has released three: the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which are already in stores, and the foldable iPhone Duo, which goes on sale on 23 October 2026. The regular iPhone 18 has been pushed to spring 2027. If you are looking at a price tag of ₹1.65 lakh or more and wondering which model to buy, how to set it up properly, or whether the early bugs are worth worrying about, this guide answers all of that in plain English. You will find a quick model picker, a first-day setup checklist, simple explanations of the new variable-aperture camera and Siri AI, India prices, and an honest list of the problems owners have reported so far, including what Apple has fixed and what it hasn’t.

Which iPhone 18 models actually exist?

Apple announced the new lineup at its “Surprise and Shine” event on 9 September 2026. Instead of launching everything at once, it has split the iPhone 18 generation across fall 2026 and spring 2027. Here is the situation as of 15 October 2026:

On sale

iPhone 18 Pro

6.3-inch screen, A20 Pro chip, 48MP variable-aperture camera. The compact flagship.

On sale

iPhone 18 Pro Max

6.9-inch screen and the longest battery life Apple has ever offered on an iPhone.

23 Oct

iPhone Duo

Apple’s first foldable: a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch cover screen.

Spring 2027

iPhone 18, 18e, Air 2

Expected next year. Not officially announced, so treat all details as rumours for now.

Heads-up: If you searched for “iPhone 18” hoping to buy the regular model today, it is not out yet. The Pro, Pro Max and Duo are the only iPhone 18-generation phones you can buy this year.

Quick picker: which one is right for you?

Tap an option below to get a straight recommendation. (No sign-ups, no tracking, it just works.)

Get the iPhone 18 Pro. It has the same chip and the same main camera system as the Pro Max in a 6.3-inch body, and it costs less. You still get up to 36 hours of video playback by Apple’s rating.
Get the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple rates it for up to 45 hours of video playback, the best on any iPhone so far. It also gives you the biggest non-folding screen for video, reading and editing.
Look at the iPhone Duo. A passport-style foldable that opens into a 7.6-inch screen. It is a luxury purchase (from ₹2,99,900 in India), so try one in a store before you commit.
Consider waiting, or buying last year’s Pro. The regular iPhone 18 is expected in spring 2027. If you cannot wait, the iPhone 17 Pro series is still a strong phone and, with 12GB of RAM, supports the full Siri AI feature set. Otherwise the iPhone 18 Pro is the cheapest of the new generation.

First 30 minutes: iPhone 18 setup checklist

Tick these off as you go. They are in the order that saves the most hassle.

Using the new variable-aperture camera

The headline upgrade on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max is the camera. It is the first iPhone with a physical, adjustable aperture, built from six blades. You can step between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4. A lower number lets in more light and gives a blurrier background. A higher number keeps more of the scene sharp.

Which aperture should you pick?

ApertureBest forWhat you get
f/1.48Night scenes, dim restaurants, indoor eventsMaximum light, softest background
f/1.8Everyday shots, street photographyA great all-round balance
f/2.8Portraits, small groups, foodMore of the face and plate in focus
f/4Landscapes, buildings, product shotsCrisp detail from front to back

Rule of thumb: if you want a blurry background, go lower. If you want everything sharp, go higher. If you are unsure, leave it on automatic.

The new Pro camera controls

The Camera app now has built-in Pro controls: aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a histogram. These used to need a third-party app. There are also new photographic styles with texture and grain controls for a more film-like look, and 4K video in Dolby Vision HDR with cinematic effects you can add after shooting. Pro controls and the new focus tracking are exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

Beginner recipe: a better portrait in 4 steps
  1. Open Camera and switch to Portrait.
  2. Stand about a metre or two from your subject, with soft light on their face.
  3. Choose a lower aperture for a creamier background, or f/2.8 if you want both eyes sharp.
  4. Tap the face to focus, then shoot a few frames. Pick the best one later.
Beginner recipe: sharper night photos
  1. Clean the lens with a soft cloth. It really does matter.
  2. Use the widest aperture (f/1.48) so the sensor gets more light.
  3. Brace your elbows against your body, or lean on a wall.
  4. Keep still for a moment after pressing the shutter.

Siri mode and “Reference” photos

iOS 27 adds a Siri mode inside the Camera app, so you can point the camera at something and ask about it. Siri mode works on Apple Intelligence-capable iPhones, not just the new ones. The iPhone 18 Pro models also add a Reference mode, aimed at photographers, journalists and sellers who need to show a photo is genuine. It is limited to supported regions, so it may not be available in India yet.

Siri AI: what it does and how to use it

iOS 27 introduced a much smarter, more personal Siri, called Siri AI. According to Apple’s launch coverage, it can use personal context from your messages, emails and photos, understand what is on your screen, and carry out actions across apps. A few ways to try it:

  • Ask about what you are looking at. Open an article, a map or a message and ask Siri a question about it.
  • Chain tasks. Ask it to find something from a conversation and act on it, such as pulling a flight time from a message and adding it to your calendar.
  • Talk naturally. You do not need to use rigid commands any more.
Before you rely on it: Siri AI launched in beta with English. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish were due in October. Apple Intelligence features need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, and the top-tier features need 12GB of RAM. Language and regional availability can change, so check Apple India’s feature availability page for your region.

iPhone Handoff: one eSIM, two iPhones

iOS 27 adds iPhone Handoff, which lets you use one eSIM across two iPhones and switch between them. It is handy if you keep an old phone as a backup, or if you carry a Duo and a second phone.

Battery and charging tips

Apple’s ratings are 36 hours of video playback for the Pro and 45 hours for the Pro Max. In real life, expect less if you use 5G, play games or keep the screen very bright. Here is how to stretch it:

  • Charge smart. Wired charging with a 60W-capable USB-C setup can take the Pro to about 50% in roughly 15 minutes, by Apple’s figures. MagSafe wireless charging takes about 30 minutes for 50%.
  • Check the heavy apps. Open Settings → Battery to see which apps use the most power.
  • Use Low Power Mode on long travel days.
  • Avoid heat. Do not leave your phone on a car dashboard or charge it under a pillow. The new vapor chamber helps, but heat still ages batteries.
  • Keep your software current. Apple often improves battery behaviour in point updates.

Using the iPhone Duo (foldable) well

The Duo has a 5.4-inch cover screen for quick tasks and a 7.6-inch inner display that opens like a small tablet. It runs the same A20 Pro chip with 12GB of RAM, and it is eSIM-only. A few habits make a foldable feel natural:

  • Use the cover screen for quick things. Messages, maps, payments and calls rarely need the big screen.
  • Unfold for reading, video and multitasking. That is where the 7.6-inch display shines.
  • Be gentle with the hinge. Keep dust and grit away from it, and do not force it open.
  • Consider a folio case. Apple’s Duo Folio, which has a built-in kickstand, is listed at ₹14,900 in India.
  • Check app support. Most apps will adapt, but a few may look stretched until developers update them.

Pre-orders in India open at 5:30 PM IST on 16 October, with sales from 23 October.

12 tips most people miss

  1. Customise Camera Control. Pick which setting it adjusts so you are not digging through menus.
  2. Use the smaller Dynamic Island. It can track up to three Live Activities at once, so keep a timer, music and delivery going together.
  3. Shoot Dual Capture video. Record with the front and back cameras at the same time for reactions or vlogs.
  4. Check the histogram. If the graph is crammed to the right, the photo is probably too bright.
  5. Try texture and grain styles. Fun for travel and street shots.
  6. Turn on iCloud Photos wisely. Give yourself enough storage before the 48MP files fill your phone.
  7. Pick the right storage tier. If you shoot lots of 4K video, 512GB is usually more comfortable than 256GB.
  8. Set up Emergency SOS and add your emergency contacts.
  9. Use Find My. Also share your location with family for set durations.
  10. Use Apple Cash bill splitting if your region supports it.
  11. Add Low Power Mode to Control Center. One swipe and one tap gets you through a long travel day.
  12. Restart weekly. It clears small glitches and keeps things smooth.

Known issues and fixes (iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and Duo)

Every new iPhone has teething problems, and this launch has had a few. Here is where things stand as of 15 October 2026, split into what Apple has fixed, what is still open and what is only a rumour. The first step for almost everything is the same: open Settings → General → Software Update and install the latest iOS 27 version.

Be careful with claims: many reports come from Reddit, forums and a handful of owners. Where Apple has confirmed something we say so. Where it has not, we mark it as unconfirmed.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

My iPhone 18 Pro restarts when Face ID fails

Apple acknowledged this and fixed it in iOS 27.0.1, released in late September.

  1. Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install the latest iOS 27 version.
  2. If it still restarts, go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Reset Face ID, restart the phone and set Face ID up again.
  3. If it keeps happening, book a diagnosis with Apple. One owner reported that Apple’s diagnostics found their unit faulty.
The touchscreen freezes for a moment

Apple’s fix for the Notification Center and Control Center case is also in iOS 27.0.1. Update first. Until then, avoid pulling down both panels at the same time. If the screen still freezes in normal use, remove the screen protector and test again, since a poorly fitted one can cause touch problems. Then book a diagnosis if it continues.

Photos at 2x look discoloured

Apple lists this as fixed in iOS 27.0.1 for a small number of units. Update, then shoot the same scene at 2x and f/1.48 in the same light to check. If the colour glitch is still there, contact Apple support with a sample photo.

My iPhone shows “SOS” or has no cellular service

This has been reported mainly by AT&T customers with the iPhone 18 Pro Max, sometimes after an eSIM transfer. Apple has pushed carrier settings updates, but it has also said phones that have already lost service still need a hardware replacement. Whatever your carrier, try Apple’s own steps:

  1. Turn Airplane Mode on for about 15 seconds, then off.
  2. Open Settings → Cellular and switch your line off and back on.
  3. Restart the iPhone.
  4. Go to Settings → General → About and install any carrier settings update that appears.
  5. Contact your carrier. Have your phone number, the error message and your IMEI or EID ready (both are in Settings → General → About).

Avoid repeatedly resetting the phone. If the issue persists, ask the carrier or an Apple Store to check whether your unit needs replacing.

My eSIM won’t activate

Some markets and models are eSIM-only, so this matters. You need Wi-Fi, an active plan from a carrier that supports eSIM and the latest iOS. Then follow the same five steps as above: toggle Airplane Mode, reset your line in Cellular settings, restart, install the carrier update and contact the carrier. Ask for a fresh eSIM QR code if the first one fails.

The speaker or earpiece crackles, ticks or pops

This is the one problem without a confirmed cause or fix. Owners of both the Pro and Pro Max describe it, often from the earpiece, while scrolling, getting notifications, typing or on calls. Apple has not made a statement. iOS 27.0.1 does not mention it, and some people say their replacement phones did the same thing. Things worth trying:

  1. Update to the latest iOS and restart.
  2. Remove the case and screen protector, then test again.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off and try different audio sources and volume levels.
  4. Note whether it happens in every app or only one. If it is every app, it is probably not the app.
  5. Book a diagnosis. Keep your invoice and note the date you first noticed it, in case you need a return or replacement.

It is only worth worrying about if you hear it regularly. Many owners hear nothing at all.

Battery drains fast or the phone gets warm

A few days of extra drain and warmth after setup is normal, because the phone is restoring apps and indexing in the background. Let it finish, restart once indexing is done and update your apps. Then open Settings → Battery to see which apps use the most power. If it gets hot while fast charging, use a certified charger and cable, take the case off and charge in a cool place. If it is hot while idle for days, contact Apple.

The paint on the frame is peeling

A few owners, mostly in South Korea, have reported paint wearing off the frame. These reports are unverified and there is no recall or repair programme. If you see it, photograph the damage, keep your invoice and contact Apple support. Using a case from day one is the simplest way to protect the finish.

Keyboard lag, stutter or glitches after updating

These come from general iOS 27 complaints rather than something specific to the iPhone 18. They are community-reported, not Apple-confirmed. Restart first, then update apps. Some users say turning off Keyboard Feedback in Settings → Sounds & Haptics, or switching from tinted icons to the default look, reduced stutter. Many people report iOS 27 running smoothly, so give it a few days before worrying.

I can’t find Siri AI or it won’t turn on

Make sure you are on iOS 27 and that your iPhone is an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. Then check that your device and Siri language are supported. Siri AI launched in beta with English, and more languages were due in October.

iPhone Duo: the crease and the camera

The Duo is not free of the foldable crease. Hands-on coverage shows a faint vertical dip through the middle of the 7.6-inch screen. It is most visible at certain angles and in some lighting, and much less obvious face-on. The matte layer helps reduce it. Early reports also say the under-display camera is easy to spot against the matte finish. The same coverage notes the Duo has no Face ID and no Action Button. None of this is a fault you can fix with settings. It is how the phone is built, so look at one in person before paying ₹2,99,900 or more.

What about the report that 40% of Duos are unusable?

Treat it with caution. The figure comes from a Chinese outlet and anonymous sources, and refers to yield on a small early production run. Apple has not confirmed it and no independent outlet has verified it. It may mean limited early stock rather than faulty phones reaching buyers. The practical advice is to buy from Apple or an authorised seller, check the phone on arrival, and keep the return window in mind.

Buying in India? Protect yourself.
  • Buy from Apple India or an authorised reseller, and keep the invoice.
  • Install the latest iOS 27 update before you judge the phone.
  • Test the speaker, earpiece, Face ID, camera and cellular in the first few days, while the return window is open.
  • Avoid unauthorised repairs, which can affect warranty coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Which iPhone 18 models are available right now?

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max (on sale since 18 September 2026) and the iPhone Duo (on sale from 23 October 2026). The standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2 are expected in spring 2027 and have not been announced.

What are the known problems with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max?

As of 15 October 2026, Apple has confirmed and fixed three launch bugs in iOS 27.0.1: a restart after a failed Face ID check, a colour glitch in some 2x photos taken at f/1.48, and a touchscreen that could stop responding when Notification Center and Control Center were opened together. Still open or unconfirmed: crackling or popping from the speaker or earpiece, cellular loss on some AT&T iPhone 18 Pro Max units in the US, and scattered reports of finish wear and heat.

Has Apple fixed the iPhone 18 Pro Face ID restart bug?

Yes. Apple confirmed that some iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units could restart unexpectedly when Face ID failed to authenticate, and fixed it in iOS 27.0.1. Go to Settings, General, Software Update and install the latest version. If your phone still restarts, book a diagnosis with Apple.

Why is my iPhone 18 Pro speaker crackling or popping?

The cause is not confirmed. Owners of both the Pro and Pro Max describe crackling, ticking or popping, often from the earpiece, during app use, notifications, typing or calls. Apple has not issued a statement, iOS 27.0.1 does not list a speaker fix, and some people report that replacement phones made the same sound. Restart, update, test without a case and with Bluetooth off, and book a diagnosis if it happens in every app.

Why is my iPhone 18 Pro Max stuck in SOS mode?

This has been reported mainly by AT&T customers in the US on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, sometimes after an eSIM transfer. Install the latest iOS and carrier settings update, restart, toggle Airplane Mode and contact your carrier or Apple. Apple has said phones that have already lost service may need a hardware replacement. It has not been tied to Indian carriers.

Does the iPhone Duo have a screen crease?

Yes, a faint one. Hands-on coverage shows a vertical dip through the centre of the 7.6-inch inner screen that is visible at some angles and in some light, though it is hard to spot face-on and the matte layer reduces it. The Duo also has an under-display camera that is noticeable against the matte screen. Try one in a store before buying.

Is it true that 40% of iPhone Duos are unusable?

No. That figure comes from a single unconfirmed report relayed from a Chinese outlet and anonymous sources about yield on a small early production run. Apple has not confirmed it and no independent outlet has verified it. It may point to limited early supply rather than defective phones in buyers’ hands.

Is the paint peeling on the iPhone 18 Pro?

Some owners, mainly in South Korea, report paint wearing off the frame, but the reports are unverified and there is no word of a recall. If your phone is affected, contact Apple support, keep your invoice and photograph the damage. A case and careful handling slow wear.

Should I still buy the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max?

For most buyers, yes. The three bugs Apple acknowledged are fixed in software, and many owners report no problems. Update immediately, buy from Apple or an authorised seller, keep the invoice, and check the return window so you can swap a unit with hardware issues such as persistent speaker noise.

What is the iPhone 18 Pro price in India?

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at ₹1,79,900 (256GB). The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900. Confirm the latest price on Apple India before buying.

Does Siri AI work on my older iPhone?

iOS 27 runs on the iPhone 11 and newer, but Siri AI and Apple Intelligence need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. The most advanced features need 12GB of RAM.

When will the regular iPhone 18 launch?

It is expected in spring 2027 with the iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2, but Apple has not confirmed dates.

Final verdict

For most people, the iPhone 18 Pro is the sweet spot: all the new camera and chip upgrades in a body that fits your hand. Choose the Pro Max for screen size and the best battery life. Choose the Duo only if you want a foldable and are happy to pay for it. And if you want the standard iPhone 18, hold on until spring 2027.

On reliability: the launch bugs Apple acknowledged are fixed in software, but the speaker crackle is still open and the Duo has real foldable trade-offs. Update on day one, test the phone hard while your return window is open, and keep your invoice.
